1. Start with brand identity, not genre

The most common mistake is picking a genre the owner likes. The music should answer one question: what does this brand want a customer to feel in the first ten seconds? Luxurious, energetic, comforting, edgy, calm, that answer determines genre, tempo, and production style, not personal taste.

2. Understand your customer's frame of mind

Why is the customer there, and what state are they arriving in? A gym customer at 6am wants activation energy. A spa customer wants to shed the day. A restaurant customer at Sunday brunch is in a completely different mode than at Friday dinner service. Music should meet them where they are, not fight it.

3. Match tempo to pace of service

Tempo should track your operational goal. Need faster table turns at lunch? Slightly brisker tempo. Want longer dwell time and higher check averages at dinner? Slower tempo, warmer tone. This is the single highest-leverage decision in choosing a scene.

4. Think in energy arcs, not playlists

A single flat playlist running open to close ignores the fact that your day has a shape. Plan an arc: quieter open, building midday, a distinct peak, and an intentional wind-down. Dayparting makes this automatic once it's set.

5. Zone by zone: why different spaces need different programs

Your lobby, bar, spa, and gym are different rooms with different jobs. Treat each as its own zone with its own scene rather than piping one program everywhere, the acoustic needs of a quiet waiting room and a high-energy bar are opposites.
